The UK's communications regulator, OFCOM, has fined the company behind adult website Fapello a total of £630,000 for failing to comply with the country's online safety rules.
According to Ofcom, the platform did not introduce the legally required age verification checks for UK users and also failed to respond to regulatory information requests within the required timeframe.
George Lusty, Ofcom's Director of Enforcement, made it clear that age verification is now a legal requirement, not an optional safeguard. "Age checks are no longer optional for porn sites in the UK. They are a cornerstone of our laws to protect children from content they should not be seeing."
Since July 2025, websites that host or allow access to adult content have been required to implement "highly effective" age assurance measures to ensure visitors from the UK are at least 18 years old.
Ofcom launched its investigation into Fapello's operator in November 2025. The regulator has now confirmed that £600,000 of the fine relates to the failure to implement compliant age checks, while the remaining £30,000 was issued because the company did not provide requested information on time.
Lusty also warned that companies ignoring regulatory requests can expect enforcement action. "Providers also need to know that if they don't supply accurate information to us on time, when we request it, they should expect to face enforcement action, including fines."
Although Fapello has since blocked access for UK users, Ofcom says it will continue monitoring the platform to ensure it remains compliant with UK regulations.
The regulator is also stepping up enforcement across the industry. Earlier this week, Ofcom confirmed it is investigating adult content provider Bit Hive, after raising concerns that one of its age verification methods may not meet the required standard of being "highly effective."
To help platforms comply, Ofcom has outlined several acceptable methods of age verification, including:Regardless of the method used, Ofcom says any age assurance system must be technically accurate, robust, reliable, and fair to meet the requirements of UK law.
The latest enforcement action signals that Ofcom is taking a firm stance on online safety and is prepared to issue substantial fines against platforms that fail to meet their legal obligations.
